Years ago, a friend and I were both pregnant at the same time. But on the day my son was born, hers died. He was stillborn. We didn’t talk about it for years. And then one day my friend called me and told me that her son being stillborn wasn’t the whole story. She’d had an abortion later in the pregnancy — in the third trimester. I'm Jennifer Pemberton and this is LATER, a podcast about abortion after 24 weeks and the conversations we’re just too uncomfortable to have. Over the next six episodes, my friend, who I'm calling Obi's Mom, is going to candidly share her later abortion experience. It brought up some real existential questions for her. Some of them can never be answered, but some of them can. Together, we talked to people all over the country – the world even – to see if they could help her make sense out of some of her experience. LATER is written by Jennifer Pemberton. This episode was edited by Emily Siner with sound design by Tony Voss Williams. LATER is supported – at least so far – by more than 60 individual donors, who opened their hearts to a really complicated story when it wasn’t even fully formed. We could still use some help getting the series finished up. You can donate at laterthepodcast.com.
